There’s nowhere quite like the Caribbean, with its seemingly endless white-sand beaches, charming towns brimming with colourful architecture and, of course, a year-round sunny climate. If it’s your first visit to the Caribbean islands, you might be wondering where the must-see spots are, and where you’ll visit during your cruise. Read on to find out all about some of our favourite spots in the region, and why we reckon a cruise is the perfect way to discover them.
When we make port in the capital of the Bahamas, you’ll be in the centre of the action straight away. From Prince George Wharf, it’s just a three-minute walk to Bay Street, the town’s main hub, where you’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants. Want to hit the beach first? We don’t blame you – Western Esplanade Beach is just 15 minutes’ walk away, or you can grab a water taxi to the aptly named Paradise Island.
Welcome to charming Charlotte Amalie, which you’ll find on the capital of the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas. This is the place to pick up some (duty-free) souvenirs to take home – you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to jewellery boutiques. Don’t miss the quintessentially Caribbean Magens Bay Beach, whose warm white sand stretches around the bay for three quarters of a mile.
If you’re an architecture-lover, you’ll fall in love with the historic port of Fort-de-France. It’s revered for its colonial architecture – look out for ornate balconies and the photogenic Fort St Louis, which dates back to the 17th century. Take a tour around this formidable fortress, or, back in the town centre, stroll around the Grand Marché. You’ll find local produce as well as crafted trinkets. Soothe your senses with a peaceful walk around the Jardin de Belata, a botanic garden home to plenty of exotic plants and a treetop walk.
Busy Basseterre is all about the good vibes – or, as the locals would say, ‘limin’, which roughly translates as relaxing, drinking and talking. It’s also a great place to enjoy the water. Frigate Bay is one of our favourite spots. This little inlet boasts not only a sandy beach, sheltered cove and panoramic viewpoints, but a lively beach bar. Paddle in the waves or explore the marine life with a spot of snorkelling.
Speaking of water sports, the Mexican port of Cozumel is famed for its scuba diving opportunities. You’ll find some of the best and most colourful reefs in the world here. The best place to discover them is at Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, where you’ll float by submerged sculptures that are part of the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art. Alternatively, head to the eco park Chankanaab, which features underwater caves and a lagoon that’s also home to dolphins and sea turtles.
Drive for an hour from Castries, and you’ll find Soufrière. This town is a geological wonder, home to the Pitons – twin volcanic plugs which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are considered icons of the island of St Lucia. Also in Soufrière is the Diamond Falls Botanic Gardens, where you can bathe in natural mineral baths believed to have numerous benefits for the body and mind. There’s also an awe-inspiring waterfall to admire, and tropical vegetation which feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the port.
