Fancy indulging in some retail therapy on your next Caribbean cruise? You’re in luck, because from Cuba to Jamaica and from luxury goods to quirky crafts, the Caribbean is full of places to pick up some souvenirs to take home with you. Read on to discover our favourite shopping spots.
Welcome to the capital of St Thomas: Charlotte Amalie. You’ll find hundreds of duty-free shops here, making it the ideal place to pick up a bargain. You’ll find most of the shops on Back Street, Main Street and Waterfront Street, where you can take your pick from jewellery, alcohol, clothing and much more. You don’t even have to travel too far from the cruise terminal to find shopping opportunities – popular area Havensnight is a stone’s through from where we dock.
Head to San Juan for those one of a kind pieces and local crafts. Hidden down the curving, cobbled streets you’ll find plenty of independent boutiques selling things like jewellery and clothing. For eye-catching textile tote bags, check out Concalma, or for authentic panama hats, have a look in Olé.
Spend a blissful afternoon shopping in tax-free Barbados. If you’d like to pick up some local art or pottery, you’ll find a wide of artists and makers in Pelican Village, such as Earthworks Pottery and On The Wall Art Gallery. There are plenty more shops in Bridgetown, the bustling centre of Barbados. Cave Shephard is one of the most well-known shops: here, you can pick up anything from diamonds to rum.
Philipsburg’s Front Street, which runs parallel to the beach, definitely holds its own when it comes to the best shopping destinations in the Caribbean. It’s a mile long, and offers over two dozen duty free shops in which to hunt down a bargain. There are also upmarket boutiques such as Tommy Hilfiger and Tiffany. The Sint Rose Shopping Mall is packed full of luxury boutiques, including Cartier and Lalique. If it’s more gift shops you’re looking for to pick up bits and bobs for family and friends, head to Old Street.
You’ll find that plenty of luxury goods – including alcohol, leather and fragrances – are tax-free in the Bahamas, and there’s no better place to stock up than lively Nassau. Bay Street is the place to be, and there’s plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from too. While you’re there, don’t miss Port Lucaya Marketplace and the well-known Straw Market. Here, you can find Bahamian crafts like conch shell jewellery.
Jewellery-lovers, listen up: in Christiansted on the Virgin Island of St Croix, you can’t go home without one of the island’s signature silver or gold hook bracelet. It originated from Sonya’s on Company Street, but you’ll find various iterations all over the island. If you’re looking for even more local goods, head to Itiba in nearby Frederiksted. Here, you’ll find lots of handmade items, including soaps, butters, lotions and oils all with deliciously tropical scents. For bookstores and boutiques, take a gentle stroll towards Gallows Bay Marketplace, which is just east of Christiansted.
Jamaica is the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean, making it that little bit easier to haggle for a bargain. Some of the best-known souvenirs to pick up from Jamaica are foodstuffs, including Appleton Rum and Blue Mountain Coffee. If you’re in the market for leather goods, check out Bridget Sandals and Callaloo Clothing, who also specialise in colourful clothing which encapsulates the vibrant spirit of Jamaica.
